Lance Cpl. Robert Carlile, a rifleman serving with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, donated blood platelets to save an anonymous patient's life who was suffering from Myelodysplastic Syndrome in Washington D.C., July 1, 2013. Carlile's act of kindness inspired other Marines to donate. MSD is the name of a group of conditions that occur when the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow are damaged. The damage leads to low numbers of one or more types of blood cells.
