An Alaska Army National Guard UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter, piloted by soldiers from B Company, 1st Battalion, 207th Aviation Regiment, prepares to airlift the U.S. Forest Service’s Lassen Interagency Hotshot Crew of Susanville, Calif., from Palmer Airport, June 28, 2013. The 21-member crew was transported some 100 miles northeast, near the vicinity of the Susitna River and Wantana Creek, to relieve Bureau of Land Management smoke jumpers already on-scene. Unusually hot and dry weather, coupled with severe lightning strikes, have made conditions prime for wildfires, with more than 110 active fires currently burning throughout the state. Army National Guard assets are activated on order when all Federal, state, and contract resources have been exhausted.
