A change of responsibility ceremony in the U.S. Army is a formal event that marks the transfer of enlisted leadership from one first sergeant to another. During the ceremony, the unit’s guidon is passed between leaders, symbolizing the handoff of authority, responsibility and accountability for the unit’s Soldiers, while honoring the outgoing first sergeant and recognizing the incoming leader.
