Yorktown, Va. (March 5, 2026) An exterior photo of Building 704 onboard Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. The building, also referred to as The Nelson House, is slated for demolition. This building is a contributing element to the Skiffe’s Creek Annex, a historic district eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. During the Cold War from 1953-1962, the Annex was the only “Q-area” for storing and assembling atomic weapons. Building 704 originally housed military personnel assigned to this area of the installation. After the atomic weapons were relocated after the Cold War, the building was utilized as enlisted housing until it was ultimately closed in 2017. The building has remained vacant since that time.
