FLEET ACTIVITIES YOKOSUKA, Japan (March 3, 2026) -- Katsuhiro Watanabe, a crew chief from Commander, Navy Region Japan (CNRJ) Fire & Emergency Services onboard Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY), was named the Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) Civilian Firefighter of the Year for 2025 Friday, February 27. Watanabe is in his 40th year of service at the department where he started when he was just 19-years-old. Watanabe led responses to over 500 incidents and spearheaded critical training initiatives for both enlisted and civilian firefighters while serving as crew chief. His efforts forged stronger U.S.-Japan integrated response teams and safeguarded more than $4.5 billion worth of 7th Fleet assets. (U.S. Navy photo by James Kimber)
