The United States Army Corps of Engineers’ Fort Worth District Real Estate Division has several antique survey instruments on display. Here, a transit sits atop a wooden tripod with a plumb bob centered over a survey marker. The transit is a telescope that can rotate horizontally and vertically on precise calibrated circles. It’s used for measuring angles between two fixed points. The plumb bob is used to find a true vertical line through the force of gravity. It is an essential tool for ensuring structures are built straight up and down in construction, masonry, surveying, and countless other tasks where precision alignment is critical. A survey marker is a permanent object placed to mark a precisely surveyed point on the earth’s surface. It can be used as a fixed reference point by future surveyors to ensure accuracy and consistency in measuring land.
