The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force tank leading ship JS Shimokita (LST 4002) departs Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, May 20, 2013. Along with the guided missile destroyer JS Atago (DDG 177) and the helicopter destroyer JS Hyuga (DDH 181), the Shimokita was en route to San Diego to participate in multilateral exercise Dawn Blitz 2013. Dawn Blitz is a multilateral amphibious exercise designed to strengthen the skills of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps as well as several partner nations.
