On May 19, 2013, Texas Army National Guard Col. Charles Aris, center, and Italian city officials, local citizens, and Italian veteran organizations sprinkle hundreds of thousands of rose petals into the Rapido River at Sant'Angelo, Italy, in honor of those who were killed in World War II on Jan. 20-22, 1944. More than 1,700 T-Patch soldiers were killed attempting to cross the flooded river to drive the German forces out of the town. (Photo by Texas Army National Guard Spc.
