A visitor learns about the Vickers Aircraft Transport Isolator, ca. 1970s, a self-contained biocontainment unit for transporting patients with highly infectious diseases to provide in-flight care. The VATI could be loaded on board any standard Air Force cargo aircraft. The patient was isolated in the sealed container under negative air pressure. Ventilation was maintained by a battery-powered HEPA-filtered system providing five air exchanges per hour. The hood, sleeves, and gloves along the sides allowed healthcare providers to ‘come inside’ the isolator to care for the patient without wearing a biosafety suit. This exhibit is on display at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Siver Spring, Maryland, in January 2026.
