A U.S. Army Soldier, New Jersey Army National Guard, assists a New Jersey Youth ChalleNGe Academy Class 61 candidate with in-processing at the National Guard Training Center, Sea Girt, New Jersey, Jan. 13, 2026. During the first two weeks of the 22-week program, candidates undergo an acclimation phase where they will adjust to the program’s physical, mental, and social discipline. Youth ChalleNGe Academy is an alternative education program established by the United States Congress in 1993, administered by the individual states’ National Guard, and provided at zero cost to parents. Designed to produce graduates with the values, skills, education, and self-discipline necessary to succeed as adults, hundreds of at-risk 16- to 18-year-old New Jerseyans have successfully completed New Jersey Youth ChalleNGe since its first class began in September 1994.
