U.S. Marines attend Finnish Independence Day Ceremony

Finnish Navy Capt. Mikko Laakkonen, commanding officer of the Nyland Brigade, reads a script during a flag raising for the Finnish Independence Day ceremony as part of Exercise Freezing Winds 2025 in Dragsvik, Finland, Dec. 6, 2025. Finland’s Independence Day, celebrated on December 6, honors the nation’s 1917 declaration of independence from Russia and pays tribute to the resilience and sacrifice that secured its freedom. Freezing Winds is conducted to increase interoperability between Marines, Finland, and NATO Allies by executing combined amphibious operations in and around the Baltic Sea littorals, and is part of a regularly occurring series of exercises in northern Europe that demonstrates the capability to deploy and train Marines and Sailors in support of the NATO Alliance.
