The Lamp of Knowledge is a foundational symbol of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. It sits out front of the Lewis and Clark Center on Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The lamp symbolizes the knowledge acquired at the college. The fist represents the military nature of this knowledge. The rifle and sword within the clinched fist symbolize the origin of the college in 1881 as the School of Application of Infantry and Calvary. The guided missile represents the future. The Lamp of Knowledge as a whole is symbolic of the leaders who emerge from the school with their knowledge of the past, present, and future to make them agile and lethal warfighters.
