NEWPORT, R.I.— U.S. Naval War College (NWC) Captain T.B. Kittredge Historian Prof. David Kohnen addresses NWC staff, students and faculty during a lecture at the Newport, Rhode Island, campus, Nov. 24, 2025. The lecture was titled “Great Games:' Army-Navy Football, the Naval War College, and the Invention of the National Football League in 1920” and focused on the Army and Navy’s role in the invention of modern football and how football was incorporated into the framework of NWC by focusing on key elements of naval strategy akin to running plays. Established in 1884, NWC informs today’s decision-makers and educates tomorrow’s leaders by providing educational experiences and learning opportunities that develop their ability to anticipate and prepare strategically for the future, strengthen the foundations of peace, and create a decisive warfighting advantage.
