A fractured F-4 Phantom II aircraft canopy is pictured in a warehouse at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn. The canopy was referred to by Arnold team members involved in its unboxing and subsequent shipment as the “Romero canopy” due to the “Capt. Romero” marking on its frame. It is believed the cockpit cover was either salvaged from an ejection or, more likely, was subjected to bird impact testing at the S-3 Bird Impact Range at Arnold, more famously known as the “Chicken Gun.” Several canopies and a drone engine from the 1980s stored in the warehouse since the late 1980s to early 1990s were shipped this summer to the Air Force Materiel Command History and Heritage Directorate for possible display.
