Some plants have both male and female parts located within the flower; others, known as monoecious, have separate male and female parts, such as the Okeechobee gourd. It's female part holds the gourd at the base and the flower crowns its top. The vine uses shrubs and trees in search of sunlight.
USACE is charged with surveying and monitoring the region's sensitive ecosystems, and the gourd is a key focus. To ensure this unique species is protected, USACE collaborates closely with its local, state, and federal partners. (US Army Photo by Brigida I. Sanchez)
