U.S. Air Force Airmen conduct land navigation training during the Specialized Personnel and Equipment for Austere Reconnaissance and Surveillance (SPEARS) course at Fort Chaffee Maneuver Training Center, Barling, Ark. The 188th Civil Engineer Emergency Management team led the instruction, drawing on their extensive experience from deployments, multi-force exercises, and diverse training backgrounds. The SPEARS course supports the Air Force’s Six Fights We Must Win by preparing Airmen to operate in contested, degraded, and austere environments. The multi-day field exercise challenges participants to plan and execute CBRN missions while overcoming logistical obstacles and includes instruction on small team dynamics, casualty care under fire, tactical communications, and vehicle airlift operations.
