250922-O-NJ594-1043, September 19, 2025, Virginia Beach, Va. -- Lt. Ryan Garrigues and Lt. Jordan Rede, microbiologists with Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit TWO (NEPMU-2) teach a student how to use a microscope, and about bacteria and parasites, at the microscope station during a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) event, Sept. 19, 2025, at Oceana Naval Air Station, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The purpose of the station was to allow students to get a close-up look at bacteria and parasites through the eyes of a Navy microbiologist. Staff with the Navy and Marine Corps Force Health Protection Command and NEPMU-2 set up a variety of interactive stations to educate students in a fun and captivating way and providing hands-on experiences to ignite a spark of interest for STEM. Over 8,000 students attended the event, with many visiting the stations and being introduced to the wide range of scientific and technical career opportunities available in Navy Medicine.
