U.S. Coast Guard conducts aids to navigation inspections

U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Harris, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Rudek, two divers assigned to Coast Guard Regional Dive Locker Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii sits on the aft deck of a Coast Guard Station Honolulu 45-foot Response Boat-Medium while preparing a side-scan sonar remote operated vehicle for deployment in the Honolulu harbor entrance channel in Honolulu, Hawaii, Sep. 25, 2025. U.S. Coast Guard divers use side-scan sonar remote operated vehicles to locate objects and map the underwater environment, allowing them to efficiently conduct search and recovery operations, investigate hazards to navigation, inspect submerged structures, and identify contraband on ship hulls, all while minimizing the need to put divers in the water unnecessarily and significantly reducing risk to personnel.
