A model 1861 10-inch seige mortar, used as armament from 1862-1902, sits as a display at Fort Macon State Park May 12. These cannons are similar to the mortars used by the Union Army against the fort in the 1862 bombardment. The barrel weighs 1968 pounds, the gun carriage weighs 1830 pounds and the gunpowder charge weighs 4 pounds. The cannon’s range is 2,100 yards.
