    Soldiers from the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and a bugler from the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own” conduct military funeral honors for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. William Casteel in Section 59 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, Sept. 4, 2025.

    In 1946, Casteel was drafted into the United States Army at 18 years old. He served for over 20 years, including in the Vietnam War. His military awards include the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Following his retirement from the military, Casteel worked in the U.S. Marshals Service. At 65 years old, he retired to Alexandria, VA with his wife, Catherine Boatright Casteel. They were married for 32 years when she passed in 2010.

    Hillary Hillman, Casteel’s step-granddaughter, received the U.S. flag from Casteel’s funeral service.
