Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Director Kelly McKeague presents the family of U.S. Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. John H. Danneker, 19, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with a collage during his funeral at Arlington National Cemetery, Va., Aug. 26, 2025. In June 1944, Danneker was assigned to the 565th Bombardment Squadron in the famed 8th Air Force, in the European Theater. On June 20, Danneker, the left waist gunner onboard a B-24J “Liberator” bomber, went missing in action when his plane crashed into the Baltic Sea off the coast of Denmark after colliding with another B-24 in the same formation. Combined efforts from Trident Archäologie, Wessex Archaeology, the Royal Danish Navy, Project Recover and the Langelands Museum, during multiple underwater recovery missions allowed for DPAA personnel to account for Danneker on Dec. 24, 2024.
