JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (July 14, 2025) – Michelle Garcia, of Atlanta, a sophomore attending the University of Georgia at Athens, measures 3D printed materials before and after ozone sterilization during her internship at Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio. Her experiment supports the on-going testing of the SteriO3 Rugged Ozone Sterilization System Model M1’s (ROSS M1) capabilities of sterilizing 3d printed materials and instruments. “Being able to utilize 3D printed medical and dental tools will cost less, increase accessibility, and save more lives,” said Garcia. “It’s important to ensure these 3D printed materials maintain their mechanical strength after sterilization, so we are hoping our tests demonstrate that with this ozone sterilizer.” Garcia began her internship through the ONR’s Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP). NREIP places college and university students in the Department of the Navy laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for ten weeks during the summer. Navy Medicine Research & Development (NMR&D) makes use of multiple channels to recruit and retain critical U.S. Navy medical support personnel. The research commands reach out to the next generation of scientists through conferences, STEM events, internships and career days, and support recruiting efforts early in undergraduate and graduate programs. NAMRU San Antonio, part of NMR&D, conducts gap-driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research in support of Navy, Marine Corps and joint U.S. warfighter health readiness and lethality while engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
