Spc. Michael McElheny, a native of Fort Long Beach, Fla., and a tanker gunner for Company D, 1st battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment “Battle Boars”, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, climbs a rope as part of his assessment during the 2nd ABCT’s first Pre-Ranger course here April, 24. He is on his third from last day of his assessment, which was over a month long. The course started with 16 candidates but only three others made it as far as McElheny did that day. The course is designed to prepare and to ascertain readiness of soldiers wishing to attend Ranger School. Right now the Army is experiencing a shortage of Rangers, and the founders of this program are hoping that it will increase the successful pass rate of Spartans wanting to go to Ranger School.
