A little boy has a Humanitarian Meal Ready to Eat for a late lunch on Dec. 31, 1997, as his family waits for a room assignment at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. The Air Force is converting some dormitories into temporary housing for people displaced by Super Typhoon Paka. The typhoon hit the island the evening of Dec. 16 with sustained winds of 175 mph. One wind gust recorded at Andersen was the strongest ever recorded on earth at 236 mph.
