Caruth Smith Washington of Alhambra, Calif., the 94-year-old daughter of Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Cpl. Andrew Jackson Smith, unveils her father's portrait in the Pentagon Hall of Heroes with the aid of Gen. Eric Shinseki (rear left), Army chief of staff, and Sergeant Major of the Army Jack Tilley (right). Washington said she remembers thinking, "I felt that I hadn't lived in vain," when told her father would receive a posthumous Medal of Honor in 2000 along with President Theodore Roosevelt. "Sometimes I was very discouraged, because he was such a wonderful man. He lived to be 88 years old. He was born in a small town in Kentucky called Grand Rivers, near Paducah; he's buried there. Washington's only son, who served in the Army and Air Force, is deceased, but she's surrounded by four granddaughters, six grandsons, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. "They're trying to tell you that I look older, but I'm not," she quipped. Photo by Rudi Williams.
