Retired Army Maj. Ed W. Freeman poses with Winthrop Roosevelt, who represented his great-great-grandfather, Theodore Roosevelt, at the two soldiers' induction into the Pentagon Hall of Heroes. Freeman, earlier in the day, July 16, 2001, received a belated Medal of Honor from President Bush for gallantry in Vietnam in 1965. The elder Roosevelt, 26th U.S. president, received the nation's highest award for valor posthumously in 2000 for his role in the charge of the "Rough Riders" up San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish-American War of 1898.
