Marine Gen. Peter Pace, left, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, chose Army Command Sgt. Maj. William J. Gainey to serve as the first senior enlisted advisor to the highest ranking military officer in September 2005. As the chairman's eyes and ears on enlisted force matters, the sergeant major advised Pace on enlisted education, health, welfare, morale and housing issues for servicemembers in joint billets until the general's retirement in October 2007. Gainey is slated to retire April 25, 2008. Defense Dept. photo by U.S. Air Force C. Myles Cullen
