U.S. Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, and Sailors assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), conduct a foreign object debris walkdown on the flight deck of the USS America (LHA 6), in the Coral Sea, June 26, 2025. FOD walkdowns are performed aboard ships to remove objects on the flight deck that can be sucked into a jet engine intake and cause severe damage to jet engine compressor blades and related components. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the USS America Amphibious Ready Group in the 7th Fleet area of operations, the U.S. Navy’s largest forward deployed numbered fleet, and routinely interacts and operates with allies and partners in preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
