Sailors from the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard and a bugler from the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Band conduct military funeral honors for U.S. Navy Signalman 3rd Class Carl Felton at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
Felton joined the Navy at 17 and served during World War II. He was stationed on the British ship HMS Ceres off the coast of Omaha Beach on D-Day when the Allied invasion of Normandy occurred. Later, he was stationed in the French town of Cherbourg where he operated a signal tower for U.S. ships to exchange messages.
In 2022, French President Emmanuel Macron granted Felton the highest honor in France, declaring Felton a knight in the Legion of Honor (Ordre National de la Légion d’honneur). This occurred during a ceremony at the French Embassy in D.C. where Macron recognized Felton and five other American veterans for the role they played in liberating France during WWII.
Felton’s son, Jack Felton, received the U.S. flag from his father’s service.
