A Scan Eagle unmanned aerial vehicle is launched from the flight deck of the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) in the Gulf of Aden April 14, 2013. The Scan Eagle is a runway independent, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle system designed to provide multiple surveillance, reconnaissance and battlefield damage assessment missions. The San Antonio was part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Readiness Group and was underway in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.
