JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (May 6, 2025) – Dr. William D’Angelo, director, Directed Energy Health Effects (DEHE), was presented the Civilian Service Commendation Medal by Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio Executive Officer Cmdr. Nicholas Hamlin, Dental Corps, during a hail and farewell held at the Tri-Service Research Laboratory. D’Angelo, of Newington, Conn., was awarded the medal for his meritorious service while serving as DEHE director and department head, Biomedical Systems Engineering and Evaluation from August 2018 to May 2025. He revitalized the command’s Directed Energy Program, acquired cutting-edge equipment, and cultivated a culture of innovation, directly strengthening national defense and warfighter readiness. D’Angelo demonstrated exceptional leadership and technical expertise in advancing warfighter technologies and combat casualty care. His superior performance of duties culminated his 20 years of honorable and dedicated civilian service. NAMRU San Antonio, part of Navy Medicine Research & Development, conducts gap-driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research in support of Navy, Marine Corps and joint U.S. warfighter health readiness and lethality while engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
