Sergeant Major Michael L. Kufchak, the former 1st Marine Division sergeant major, speaks during his retirement ceremony here, April 5, 2013. Kufchak, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, joined the Marine Corps 31 years ago after a recruiter found him working at a pizza restaurant. His journey took him from serving as a guard at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., to serving as the senior enlisted leader to more than 25,000 Marines and sailors in 1st Marine Division.
