Dr. Jill Phan Naval Medical Research Command science director and Lt. Cmdr. Dannett Bishop, NMRC researcher, allow visitors to try out a prop biocontainment unit during the April 26, 2025, Military Medical Innovation event at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Maryland.
As visitors participate in the hands-on activity, Phan and Bishop describe how NMRC supports U.S. warfighter health, readiness and lethality, as researchers study infectious diseases, biological warfare detection and defense, combat casualty care, environmental health concerns, aerospace and undersea medicine, operational mission support and epidemiology.
Phan and Bishop detail an Ebola outbreak in 2014-2016 in West Africa. The Department of Defense and NMRC used innovative mobile biodetection technology to reduce the diagnostic testing time in the field. Through the ability of mobile research laboratories, blood samples are analyzed at a much higher speed improving military readiness.
