Dr. Brett Huhman (left), U.S. Naval Research Laboratory senior research engineer, shows National Museum of Health and Medicine visitors a UV light diagnostic testing device during the April 26, 2025, Military Medicine Innovation event at the museum in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Huhman demonstrates how the device is used to characterize different UV light sources and their ability to detect and kill diseases. Using a light collection fiber spectrometer, NRL determined the light intensity, time, and distance needed to kill a disease.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, this research was especially important for military service members. The technology is a quick and efficient method to help disinfect materials in the field, protecting our warfighters from disease. (National Museum of Health and Medicine Photo by Kevin Sommer Giron)
