The first C-17 aircraft to land on one of two new runways built at Travis AFB, Calif., touches down on the morning of March 28, 2013. The $68.4 million project paved a 10,995 by 150-foot runway, as well as an 4,100 by 90-foot assault landing zone. The runways will allow for expanded C-17 aircraft training for the base, as well as the region. The addition of the ALZ will allow aircrews to train at Travis, instead of flying 2.5 hours to Joint Base Lewis-McChord AFB, Wash. With fuel savings of $7.3 million per year, the ALZ will pay for itself in less than three years. (U.S. Air Force photo/Ken Wright)
