A Great Egret spotted on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., Mar 18, 2025. Great Egrets are wading birds that thrive in freshwater and saltwater habitats. They used to be hunted for their plumes in the 19th Century and as a result of education, conservation and restoration measures, the population of wading birds such as the Great Egret have grown. Parris Island boasts a large population of wading and shore birds due to the good foraging, feasting and roosting habitat found on the island. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Pfc. Isaac De Leon)
