SAN DIEGO (Feb. 14, 2025) – Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Stevenson Garcia, a surgical technician aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), performs a damage control surgery for polytrauma during an integrated Shipboard Surgical Trauma Training with Fleet Surgical Team Two (FST2). FST2 executed the week-long hyper-realistic simulation training to enhance Role II knowledge, skills, and abilities as part of Iwo Jima’s pre-deployment cycle. Iwo Jima is equipped with a Role II medical facility aboard which allows the ship’s medical personnel to administer care to patients only second to the Navy’s two hospital ships. FST2 will embark with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (IWO ARG) to enable its team with enhanced medical and surgical capabilities in support of contingency operations. A team is comprised of medical and surgical professionals with mission critical specializations designed to supplement a ship’s medical department with medical specialists. Iwo Jima is the flagship of the IWO ARG a force uniquely positioned to deter aggression, project power through presence abroad, and execute contingency missions with its integrated Marine Corps team in support of U.S. strategic interests.
