Mulch piles steam at Enka Temporary Debris and Reduction Site in North Carolina Jan. 29, 2025. The steaming is part of the natural decomposition process which generates heat from microbial activity. The released heat meets cooler air, condensing into visible steam.

The debris piles will be moved to landfills to be used as daily top cover

The Corps of Engineers is working in partnership with local, state and federal agencies, to include the Federal Emergency Management Agency, in response to the damage from Hurricane Helen. (U.S. Army photo by Stacey Reese/released)
