Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin, III, and First Lady Jill Biden visit with fifth grade students attending Maxwell Air Force Base’s STARBASE, Sep. 13, 2024. STARBASE is a Department of Defense Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics awareness and outreach program for local youth. Biden also highlighted the new universal pre-kindergarten program being implemented at Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools. Austin engaged with troops and announced the fourth iteration of his “Taking Care of Our People” initiative, which is a top priority for the DOD and a core readiness issue.
