Marine veteran Brian Riley, native of Oshkosh, Wis., throws a shot put during track and field practice for the 2013 Marine Corps Trials at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Feb. 27, 2013. In 2011, Riley was shot in the ankle while with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion in Sangin, Afghanistan. The bullet hit two major arteries and a nerve cluster, so doctors were forced to amputate his leg below the knee. This is Riley's first year at the Trials and he will be competing in shooting, cycling and field events. The Trials is an opportunity for wounded Marines, veterans and allies to compete in wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, track and field, swimming, archery and shooting. The top 50 athletes will go on to compete against wounded warriors from the other branches of military service at the Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., in May.
