FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – After serving 15 years in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, then Staff Sgt. Sarah M. Joseph left in 2021 to pursue a calling – to become a behavioral health officer. A journey that would take her through programs at both Liberty University and Penn West University before being licensed as a clinical social worker. She now begins a new chapter in her military career as she re-enters the Pennsylvania Army National Guard commissioned as a first lieutenant and social worker, after being commissioned Oct. 4 by Deputy Adjutant General-Army Maj. Gen. Laura A. McHugh.
“It means so much to me because as an enlisted Soldier my reach was very limited,” said Joseph, who will now serve with the Pennsylvania Medical Readiness Detachment here and help prepare commonwealth Soldiers for deployment around the world. “As an officer, I feel I’ll be able to serve more service members, from a behavioral health standpoint, in a manner that serves to strengthen the Pennsylvania National Guard.”
