Adam Taylor, a park ranger with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District's Rough River Lake, helps to relocate mussels at Green River near Brownsville, KY, Sep. 6, 2024.

With more than 70 species of mussels, 43 of which exist nowhere else in the world, the Green River is one of the most biologically diverse rivers in the country. Mussels play a vital role in river ecosystems by filtering water and promoting biodiversity.

Activities on the Green River have been a catalyst for the entire Sustainable Rivers Project. SRP efforts complement other reservoir-centric water resource projects by demonstrating that a strategic and science-based approach can be used at USACE projects to maintain or enhance benefits provided to the nation.
