Collin Black, a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) scientific recovery expert (SRE), excavates a unit during a DPAA recovery operation in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Aug. 2, 2024. Personnel use the shovels and other tools to excavate soil from the site in search of a missing U.S. service member from the Vietnam War. Since 1985, the United States and Lao governments have worked closely together to find and recover unaccounted-for American service members.
