U.S. Marines with the Crisis Response Element, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, investigates a chemical lab in the basement of a model town during a platoon reinforcement exercise on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, August 1, 2024. The CRE is the 31st MEUs chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear response force deployed when one of the four elements of CBRN is suspected to be at an objective or area of operations. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the USS America Amphibious Ready Group in the 7th Fleet area of operations, the U.S. Navy’s largest forward-deployed numbered fleet, and routinely interacts and operates with allies and partners in preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
