    27th Public Affairs Detachment

Lt. Col. Christopher Rankin, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 10th Mountain Division Artillery, talks about the 27th Public Affairs Detachment’s heritage of distinguished achievements spanning global operations from Operation Desert Storm to service in Iraq from 2007-2008, during a private ceremony on Fort Drum, New York, July 24, 2024. Rankin attached campaign streamers to the 27th PAD guidon to honor their outstanding performance serving the U.S. Army in multiple named operations. These streamers represent specific historical conflicts that the 27th PAD participated in with distinction. On August 7, 1990, President George H. W. Bush launched a military response named Operation Desert Shield and organized a coalition of 35 nations to defend Saudi Arabia and ultimately liberate Kuwait. During Operation Desert Shield, the 27th PAD earned three campaign participation credits for the Defense of Saudi Arabia, Liberation and Defense of Kuwait, and the Cease-Fire. The 27th PAD also provided public affairs support in the Armed Forces Expeditions in Somalia (1992-1994). The 27th PAD also earned two Meritorious Unit Commendations for admirable performance during the Southwest Asia campaign (1990-1991) and for service in Iraq from 2007-2008. The U.S. Army awards units a MUC for outstanding achievements or exceptional service in combat or non-combat operations. (U.S. Army photo by Pfc. Elijah Campbell)
