Giving the gift of life…In conjunction with the Armed Services Blood Program, Naval Hospital Bremerton’s latest blood drive collected 16 units from donors. According to Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Itzel Selvera, NHB Laboratory Department and blood drive coordinator, 56 units have been successfully collected in three blood drives this year. Just one of those units of donated blood can not only save up to three lives, but can also be separated into multiple, vital components of red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate. The red blood cells carry oxygen to the body’s organs and tissues. Plasma is a mixture of water, protein and salts and make up approximately 55 percent of the actual blood volume in the human body. Platelets help promote blood clotting, and cryoprecipitate, which is collected from plasma that has been frozen, then thawed, is a crucial coagulation agent. There is a constant need for blood, with the Armed Services Blood Bank Center – PNW coordinating drives throughout the greater Pacific Northwest to meet that responsibility. The Armed Services Blood Program mission is to provide quality blood products and support to military healthcare operations worldwide (Official Navy photo by Mass Communication 2nd Class Jennifer Benedict).
