From right, U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Phillips and Sgt. Brandon Valverde, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) mountaineers, demonstrate how a 4-to-1 hauling system can be used to hoist team members up a mountain during a recovery mission in South Korea, June 11, 2024. DPAA mountaineers were essential in the recovery mission’s progress due to the unstable terrain associated with the incident of loss. The team used these mountaineers to safely travel up and down the mountainside throughout the mission. There are approximately 7,400 unaccounted-for personnel from the Korean War.
