Kyle Robinson, a technician from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, examines the real-time kinematic positioning setup, which is the application of surveying to correct for common errors in current satellite navigation GPS systems. The team was at the Buxton Naval Facility, a Formerly Used Defense Site property located within Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Dare County, North Carolina, June 24-28, 2024, conducting geophysical work to identify any potential fuel distribution components, such as pipes or fuel tanks, remaining at the site. All high-tech instruments used at the Buxton site have the capability to output a digital signal, which is sent to a data logger that can be co-registered with GPS positional information. This data is used to develop a two-dimensional map of the underground characteristic in the area where the instrument is measuring. The next step is to use this data to assist in identifying areas that need comprehensive soil sampling under the contract that should be awarded toward the end of this year.
