Kyle Robinson, a technician from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, collects EM31 data over the sand dunes area of the Buxton Naval Facility, a Formerly Used Defense Site property located within Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Dare County, North Carolina, June 24-28, 2024, to identify any potential fuel distribution components, such as pipes or fuel tanks, remaining at the site. The EM31 is an instrument used to maps geologic variations, or any subsurface feature associated with changes in ground conductivity at depths between zero and 15 feet. All high-tech instruments used at the Buxton site have the capability to output a digital signal, which is sent to a data logger that can be co-registered with GPS positional information. This data is used to develop a two-dimensional map of the underground characteristic in the area where the instrument is measuring. The next step is to use this data to assist in identifying areas that need comprehensive soil sampling under the contract that should be awarded toward the end of this year.
