S99-09205 (4 August 1999) --- Astronaut Brian Duffy, mission commander, is lowered into a deep pool (out of frame, bottom) as he simulates a parachute drop from a troubled craft into an ocean or other large body of water. Later, Duffy and his crew mates individually deployed life rafts in the NBL's pool and simulated signaling for rescue. This training exercise took place in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL), part of the Sonny Carter Training Facility near the Johnson Space Center (JSC). The pole and simulated hatch at lower left are used to simulate egress using the escape pole, which has been standard hardware on shuttle missions since 1988.
